The mythical route
The railway line
Built in two stages, between 1892 and 1903, the railway route was an important factor in the further development of the villages of Pelion. Evaristo de Chirico, father of the famous painter Giorgio de Chirico, supervised the construction of the railway network. In the construction of the network, young De Chirico was there, observing the medium that would later inspire and consistently accompany his creations.

The mythical Pelion
According to mythology, the Centaurs lived on Pelion - that is why it is known as the mountain of the Centaurs. The Centaur battle between the Centaurs and the Lapiths took place here, with the latter winning. Also, Chiron, the son of the Titan Cronus and Philyramost and the most famous of all the Centaurs, lived here. Pelion was chosen for their holidays by all 12 gods of Olympus, since this was their summer habitat.
An unforgettable journey
Mountzouris, as the Pelion Train as it was once called, because of the steam and the smoke it left in its passage by the steam engine, crosses a route of about 90 minutes journey and of a total length of 15 kilometers and a time of about 90 minutes. The route includes images of magnificent natural landscape and intricate human constructions of carved marble and gray limestone, arched bridges, arches and gables of the tunnels.
A special example are the five-arched stone bridge Kalorema, in the area of Malaki and the large metal bridge of Taxiarchis or De Chirico with the special crossing - at this point the train will roll in a curved line, while the bridge on which it is located is straight.
From the station in Milies begins the picturesque cobblestone road that leads to the center of the village. Visitors can admire the cobbled streets, traditional guesthouses, the church of Taxiarches built before 1741, the folklore museum, the library and much more.
The access to the railway station Ano Lechonia,12 km away from Volos, is made from the road to Kala Nera, by the city bus no.5 of the line Volos - Lechonia - Platanidia that stops 50 meters away from the station, but also by car , as there is a large car park in front of the station. There are brown station signs on the adjacent road.
