Transport of persons with special needs / reduced mobility
Hellenic Train applies all the preventive safety measures against the spread of coronavirus, in accordance to the Official Instructions.
Hellenic Train offers discounted prices to persons with disabilities / reduced mobility (PRM) and to their acompanying person, upon presentation of the special Pass and of the respective special Pass issued for the accompanying person.
The above-mentioned special Passes are provided by the responsible regional Authorities of Greece or by the responsible Citizens’ Service Centers and should be certified for 2022 or 2023.
Also, the valid Disability Card is accepted in printable or digital form (via the Gov.gr Wallet application for mobile phones), with the special marking II and III. In order to provide the discount to a accompanying person, the Disability Card must be marked Σ.
Transport of persons (PRM) using wheelchair
Transport of persons with reduced mobility using a wheelchair is possible in the following trains, in the composition of which specially structured coaches are available.
It is pointed out that the total width of the wheelchairs should not exceed 70 cm and the total length of 1 meter and 30 cm.
Transport of persons with reduced mobility using a wheelchair is possible in the following trains:
Athens-Thessaloniki: ICE50, IC52, IC54, IC56, IC58, ICE60, IC62
Thessaloniki-Athens: ICE51, IC53, IC55, IC57, IC59, ICE61, IC63
Athens – Kalambaka: 882
Kalambaka – Athens: 887
Thessaloniki-Larissa: 1590, 1592, 1598, 2590, 2592, 2594, 2598, 1591, 1597, 2591, 2593, 2597.
In exceptional cases of routing of different rolling stock as well as in the other trains of the route Thessaloniki-Larissa, there is a possibility of service with dock lifts, in the stations of Thessaloniki, Plateos, Katerini, Larissa, as mentioned below.
Please, note that lifting machines, allowing users of a wheelchair to be transferred without any obstacle, are installed at the following stations:
- Central station of Athens
- Thessaloniki
- Levadia
- Larissa
- Volos
- Lianokladi
- Tithorea
- Palaiofarsalos
- Karditsa
- Trikala
- Kalambaka
- Katerini
- Platy
- Diakopto: Rack Train
- Kalavryta: Rack Train
Up to 2 persons using wheelchair may be transferred in each itinerary, in the specially structured coaches, which also provide reclining seats to the accompanying persons of users of wheelchair.
Toilets for persons with Reduced Mobility are provided in the above trains.
* It is not possible to serve passengers with wheelchairs on Hellenic Train bus lines.
For travels on the Suburban Railway Line of Athens (Piraeus – Athens – Kiato – Chalkida– Airport) as well as on the rest of the Hellenic Railways’ Network, travel planning is recommended, (at least) 48 hours before the journey, in consultation with Hellenic Train.

On weekends or holidays persons with reduced mobility may contact Hellenic Train's Call Centre by calling phone number 14511 (charged when calling from Greece 0,646€/minute, and 0,984€/minute, when calling from a mobile phone, with an additional mobile phone tax of 12% -20%, depending on the monthly bill, VAT excluded).
It is recommended, passengers (with a wheelchair) traveling on Airport-Piraeus route (with a disembarkation station in Piraeus), to travel until Athens station and continue their journey by choosing Kiato-Piraeus route. Correspondingly, passengers (with a wheelchair) traveling from Piraeus towards Airport, it is recommended, to travel by choosing Piraeus-Kiato route until Athens station and continue their journey on Piraeus-Airport route.
Rail journeys for PRM not planned in advance are possible only on the suburban line of Athens ( Kiato – Piraeus – Chalkida – Airport), on the suburban line of Thessaloniki – Larisa (itineraries: 1590, 1593, 2592, 2595), on the line Kiato-Aigio, on thw line Katakolon-Olympia and on the suburban line of Patras, to and from stations in which sales points are in operation (here).
The transport of disabled persons in wheelchairs is possible with the use of portable ramps on the lines:

Suburban railway of Patras
- Stations and trains of the Athens Suburban Railway offer the following possibilities to PRM:
- Use of a portable ramp for boarding and disembarking of passengers with reduced mobility on trains.
- Ability to provide visual information via screens regarding the next train station (on most trains).
- Audio announcements for passenger information and announcements regarding the next train station (in all trains).
- Ticket booths of low height (operating with personnel) at the stations between Metamorphosis and Airport and at the station Agh. Anargyroi.
- Stations and trains of the Thessaloniki Suburban Railway offer the following possibilities:
- Use of a portable ramp for boarding and disembarking of passengers with reduced mobility (on most trains).
- Visual information via screens regarding the next train station (on most trains).
- Audio announcements for passenger information and announcements regarding the next train station (in all trains).
At the Athens Railway Station the access of PRM is possible through a lane connecting the station’s building and the platforms.
Non scheduled PRM transportation by train (on routes other than Athens & Thessaloniki Suburban Railway) is not possible. In case passengers proceed to a ticket booth and express their wish to travel without having notified the Hellenic Train earlier, their request is processed on the spot and they are informed if the intended transportation is possible or which are the alternative transportation options (nearest boarding station, nearest departure station, etc.).
