In Athens Railroad Museum

Ideal for winter visits, the Athens Railroad Museum was established in 1979 and is Greece’s largest railroad museum. It lies in the center of the city, in Sepolia, covering an area of 1,200 sq.m. and extends in six rooms full of original exhibits.

The museum rooms narrate the story of the Greek railroad. Among them, one singles out old rolling stock, such as «Tiryns», the earliest surviving steam locomotive of German manufacturing (1884); the royal wagon of King George, which was manufactured in Piraeus; the unique smoking wagon belonging to Sultan Abdul-Aziz; as well as the historical tram of Piraeus, known from films like the celebrated “Never on Sunday”.

Fire pumps and extinguishers, machines used for ticket puncturing, old tickets, maps, timetables, stamps and bugles fill our knowledge of railroad trips in the past – from ticket purchase to disembarking. Of particular interest for the contemporary visitor are the old suits, historical photographs, old dining sets, as well as the brochures and pamphlets.

The Museum’s open area is designed to host events and the children's fun train.

The Museum is open to the public Tuesdays to Fridays. Entrance and guided tours are free.
