Easter – Livadia

Livadia

Livadia is a vibrant city in the typical colour of Roumeli. The capital of Boeotia is located in a short distance from Athens and remains a favorite destination for daily excursions by the residents of the nearby capital. The city is flanked on its north by Mt. Parnassus, popular to ski lovers, and on its south by Mt. Helicon.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Castle of St. Elias, rising above the town, is an interesting site to visit. Its fortification follows the natural terrain and ends at a large tower in the east, with a small ancient temple of Zeus within the enclosure. Another popular attraction is the picturesque area of Krya in the north of the city, with huge shady trees and crystal-clear waters.

In the center of the city, visitors may enjoy a walk on the main pedestrian street, relax in the numerous coffee-shops or visit the market. Yet, the most characteristic feature of Livadia are the countless traditional Greek taverns serving tasty local meat.

Every spring, the city celebrates Easter in the traditional way of Roumeli. In the area of Krya, delicacies, such as lamb-on-the–spit, are roasted the Greek way in open air, while locals and visitors enjoy sumptuous food and wine. The feast is accompanied by folklore music and traditional dances. For those wishing to experience a unique Greek Easter, Livadia is one of the best and most easily accessible destinations.
