PRESS RELEASE

Hellenic Train invests in the future of Greek rail

Contract signed with Alstom for 23 new Coradia Stream electric trains – €308 million investment

Athens, 22/12/2025 – Hellenic Train is entering a new era, signing an agreement with Alstom for the supply of 23 Coradia Stream electric trains worth €308 million. This marks the largest private investment ever implemented in Greece’s land transport sector, representing a decisive step toward a safer, more modern and more passenger-focused railway.

Fully financed by Hellenic Train, the investment forms a core pillar of the company’s long-term strategy to upgrade passenger services and renew its fleet, laying the foundation for a rail network that is more reliable, more sustainable and truly aligned with contemporary mobility needs

A new standard for the travel experience

The Coradia Stream trains introduce features that significantly elevate the passenger journey:

  • Low-floor design for step-free boarding
  • 335 seats on intercity trains & 362 seats on suburban trains
  • Expansive windows and adaptive LED lighting
  • Dedicated areas for bicycles, strollers and large luggage
  • Enhanced sound insulation for a quieter, smoother ride

The objective is clear: a travel experience defined by comfort, predictability and ease from the moment a passenger boards.

Next-generation safety – Fully pre-installed European-standard safety systems

All 23 trains are equipped with the most advanced European systems:

  • ERTMS – the European standard for signalling and speed control
  • ETCS – real-time digital monitoring with automatic braking capability
  • TCMS – the central “brain” supervising all critical subsystems

Together, these technologies create a multilayered safety framework that supports the driver, reduces operational risk and ensures consistent protection for passengers and staff.

Innovation & sustainability with measurable impact

The Coradia Stream platform is one of Alstom’s most successful, with more than 4,500 units operating across Europe, Africa and North America.

Key features include:

  • Up to 10% lower energy consumption through advanced regenerative braking
  • Lightweight construction and smart energy-management systems
  • 97% recyclable materials, based on circular-economy principles
  • Significantly reduced noise both inside the cabin and along the railway corridor

These trains operate more “intelligently”, with a smaller environmental footprint and high energy efficiency.

Implementation timeline – A structured, accountable project

  • First deliveries: Q2 2027
  • Start of staff training: January 2026
  • Technical support programme: 10 years provided by Alstom

Fleet allocation:

  • 12 trains for the Athens – Thessaloniki intercity corridor
  • 11 trains for Athens and Thessaloniki suburban services

“The new trains represent a major investment – but they are also a commitment to the people who travel with us every day. We want passengers to feel that their journey is easier, more comfortable and calmer. We are working towards a railway that does not merely follow European developments but meets them with confidence. With steady steps and a clear direction, we are committed to building, day by day, a journey that truly reflects what our passengers deserve. Trust is built through actions – and that is exactly what we focus on, consistently, with respect for our passengers’ time and needs,” Roberto Rinaudo, CEO, Hellenic Train, stated.

“We are honoured to celebrate this significant milestone for both Alstom and Greece, as we reaffirm our commitment to providing state-of-the-art railway solutions, with modern electric trains produced in our Center of Excellence in Savigliano. They will ensure efficiency, safety, and high performance, while offering the highest standards of comfort and accessibility for all passengers,” said Panagiota Kati, Alstom Greece Managing Director.
